The Timeless Art of Terre Mêlée: A Celebration of Handcrafted Beauty

The Timeless Art of Terre Mêlée: A Celebration of Handcrafted Beauty

In a world increasingly defined by speed and mass production, there is something deeply grounding about the quiet artistry of Terre Mêlée—an ancestral technique of working with clay that dates back to the 18th century. Terre Mêlée, meaning “mixed clays,” is a celebration of nature, patience, and the human hand. Each piece tells a story—not only of material and process but of the artist’s steady dedication to tradition and beauty.

This mesmerizing technique begins with raw clay, infused with natural oxides that embed rich colors directly into the body of the material. The color is not applied to the surface; it is part of the clay itself, creating a deeply organic expression of tone and texture. Once the clays are mixed, swirled, and layered to create their signature marbleized effect, they are shaped—carefully stamped by hand into form.

What follows is a slow, intimate dance with nature. The formed clay pieces are left to dry in the sunlight on a window seat. Depending on the season and the humidity in the air, this stage can last from a few hours to several days. There are no shortcuts here—only time, patience, and an artist's watchful eye.

Once the pieces are dry, they are sanded down with meticulous care, revealing subtle veins of color and movement within the clay. This is where the uniqueness of each object begins to fully emerge. No two pieces are ever alike.

But the transformation isn’t complete just yet. It takes not one, but two firings in the kiln to bring out the final, true colors of the clay.

To hold a Terre Mêlée object in your hands is to hold a piece of history, shaped by skilled hands and a long line of artisans who have practiced and preserved this technique. It is a reminder that beauty takes time. That craftsmanship is worth celebrating. And that even in our fast-paced world, there is still room for the slow, deliberate magic of the handmade.

We are in awe of the makers who devote their hearts and hands to this process—creating tableware and decorative pieces that are not only functional but deeply poetic. Their work invites us to pause, to admire, and to reconnect with the quiet joy of artistry.

Bringing the Outdoors in: Easy Ways to Decorate with Nature, June 2025

Bringing the Outdoors in: Easy Ways to Decorate with Nature, June 2025

There's something instantly grounding about stepping outside, snipping a few sprigs of greenery or a handful of fresh florals, and bringing them indoors. Whether it's the scent of rosemary, a bundle of wildflowers, or branches from a flowering tree, decorating with what's just outside your door is one of the simplest and most beautiful ways to keep your home feeling alive and grounded in the season.

Here are a few of our tips for using the outdoors to warm up your indoor space:

1. Take a stroll: Before you reach for store-bought flowers, take a stroll around your yard or neighborhood. Clip branches, blooms, or even interesting foliage, you might be surprised at what catches your eye once you’re paying attention. Earlier this Spring, I was lucky enough to discover that forsythia was hiding in patches around our backyard. I arranged them in our Terre Mêlée Cache Pot with a plant frog to direct the stems upright.

2: Pay attention to the lighting of a room: Once you bring greenery inside, think about where to place it. Natural light helps preserve freshness, but direct sun can cause delicate flowers to wilt faster. North- or east-facing windows are often ideal, offering soft light throughout the day.

3. Check for unwanted guests: Before arranging anything in a vase or bowl, give your cuttings a good shake and rinse. Look out for tiny bugs or hitchhikers that may be tucked into leaves or petals.

4. Mix textures and vessels: Styling greenery and florals doesn’t require a florist’s touch. Layer textures—soft blooms with sturdy herbs, feathers, or wispy stems with thick leaves—for an organic look. Place your arrangements in mason jars, raw wicker baskets, or one of our Alpine Pottery pitchers to create a rustic farmhouse style.

Our citrus of choice: Kumquats, March 2025

Our citrus of choice: Kumquats, March 2025

When you think of citrus, kumquats are not typically the first fruit that comes to mind. In contrast to other citrus fruits, kumquats have a sweet, edible peel and a more bitter flesh. The process of candying or pickling helps balance the bitterness of the flesh, creating a sweet-and-sour contrast that is both refreshing and satisfying.

Bradley Cottage In Conversation with Local Atlanta Chef Jenny Levison, April 2024

Bradley Cottage In Conversation with Local Atlanta Chef Jenny Levison, April 2024

The seasonal pollen drop is over and buds have bloomed! We settle into the season with our first al fresco meal. To celebrate our migration back outdoors, we’ve reached out to a chef whose restaurants are considered a staple of Atlanta, Jenny Levison. One of the first to make farm-to-table healthy meals approachable, Jenny launched Souper Jenny’s 25 years ago and ever since has been changing how Atlantans approach fresh food. In the 25 years Souper Jenny’s doors have been opened, Jenny has expanded the brand to four locations as well as having their Souper Farm in West Midtown Atlanta. The Farm serves as a teaching tool for individuals to learn about regenerative farming and how to grow food in small or urban spaces. Jenny was kind enough to share a bit about her story and even lend us a recipe that is perfect to celebrate this return to warmer weather, Gazpacho! Read on...

Q: When did you know you wanted to be a chef and restaurateur?

I grew up always wanting to throw celebrations, even as a little girl. I would decorate and put on small parties for my parents on special holidays before I even knew how to cook. I went to Carnegie Mellon Drama school, but a couple of years into the business of acting, I realized I loved my side hustle (the restaurant business) more than I loved standing in line for auditions every day!

Q: Your food is approachable and always feels warm and generous, which we love so much - you also lean into fresh, whole ingredients - how did this differ from what was out there when you began (25 years ago - incredible!!!) and how did you stay true to your instincts?

I grew up in southern California and was always inspired by the availability of fresh, delicious produce. When I first opened, I was definitely one of the only healthy food eateries (except R. Thomas who was a great mentor!) around. Now we have  so many healthy food options which is fantastic!

Q:  The Souper Farm is such a special place and idea. Tell us about your love of teaching creativity with food and nature…

The farm is mainly used for education. Farmer Jeff is very passionate about teaching anyone interested the benefits of regenerative farming as well as how important and easy it is to grow your own food even in the smallest of spaces!

Q: What is your favorite season to cook in?

Wow. That's a tough one. Of course I love winter because that is the height of soup season, but Spring and summer bring such a bounty of produce...I can't choose!

Q: Are you happy with where Souper Jenny's has landed, or do you feel there's more to do?

I think we are in a good spot right now. Our growth has been organic, so I am waiting until I'm inspired! I'm always up for a new adventure or challenge!
